Hartford, Conn. – Junior forward Dan
Mayernick (Gladwyne, Pa.) assisted on goals by sophomore
midfielder Anthony El-Hachem (Vernon, Conn.) and
junior forward Chris Binnie (Kingston, Jamaica) to
lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 2-1 win over the visiting
Worcester State College Lancers in men's soccer action this
afternoon. Trinity defeats the Lancers by a 2-1 count for the
second year in a row to even its season mark at 1-1.
Worcester State falls to 2-4.
The game started slowly with the first shot coming off the foot
Bantam senior midfielder Matt O'Connell (Cohasset,
Mass.) in the 13th minute and the first Lancer shot
following almost 15 minutes later. Neither goalkeeper
recorded a save in the first half, but El-Hachem netted the first
Bantam goal of the season thanks to a pass through traffic by
Mayernick with 12:20 left before the break.
Mayernick passed to Binnie along the right side to give Trinity
a 2-0 lead and Binnie, a reserve goalkeeper last fall, his first
career tally in the 60th minute. The Lancers got on the board
just over eight minutes later when junior midfielder D.J.
Gustafson (Webster, Mass.) sent the ball high into the sun
on a direct kick from just over the midfield line that Trinity
junior goalkeeper Grant Schonberg (Mendham, N.J.)
could not prevent from slipping over his arms and into the
goal. Worcester State fired off a handful of shots over the
final 20 minutes, but could not tie the game. Trinity outshot
the Lancers, 14-6, while Schonberg made two saves, and Lancer
junior tri-captain goalie Evan Wilga (Webster,
Mass.) had five stops.
