Box Score Hartford, Conn. – Senior co-captain goalkeeper Grant Schonberg (Mendham, N.J.) and his defensive unit earned their third straight shutout to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 2-0 win over the Colby College Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's soccer action on Campus Field this afternoon. Trinity improves to 5-1-2 overall and remains unbeaten in the NESCAC with a 3-0-2 mark, while the Mules drop to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the league.
It was déjà vu all over again, again, for the Bantams, who won their third straight game by a score of 2-0. Junior Anthony El-Hachem (Vernon, Conn.) scored in each of the last three games, including a goal today on a deep shot off of a free kick from more than 20 yards out. Senior co-captain forward Dan Mayernick (Gladwyne, Pa.) scored his fourth goal in four games with a rebound goal today – the eventual game-winner.
Protecting a 1-0 lead, Colby opened the second half by taking control of the ball on the offensive end, but Trinity's defensive unit frustrated the Mules by preventing any clean looks at the net. El Hachem's goal on the other end gave Trinity room to breathe in the late stages of the game, as the score came with just over twenty minutes remaining on the clock.
Schonberg made two saves in the game for the Bantams, while first-year Peter Quayle (Lincoln, Mass.) made three saves for the Mules. The Bantams started their year with two ties and a loss, but rebounded with five wins in their last five games, outscoring their opponents 10-1 in that span.
