Amherst Men's Soccer Stays Unbeaten with 1-0 Win over Bantams

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. –  Junior Spencer Noon (Farmington, Conn.) scored the game's lone goal to boost the visiting Amherst College Lord Jeffs to a 1-0 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's soccer action this afternoon on Campus Field.  Trinity falls to 5-4-2 with its third straight 1-0 loss, and slips to 3-2-2 in the conference, while Amherst, ranked No. 1 in New England and No. 8 in the country, improves to 9-0-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the league.

Noon's goal came in the 28th minute, when senior co-captain Thebe Tsatsimpe (Johannesburg, South Africa) crossed a ball from the left corner of the field inside the Trinity box, where Noon dove toward the inside post and redirected the ball to the near side of the net, out of the reach of Trinity senior captain Grant Schonberg (Mendham, N.J.), who had no play on the ball.  The goal gave Noon a tie for the team-lead in goals, with seven on the season.  The first half was otherwise evenly contested with no team in dominant control of possession.  The Lord Jeffs outshot Trinity 4-3 in the first half.

The back-and-forth battle continued in the second half, as both teams made offensive runs, but with very few translating into scoring opportunities.  With under a minute remaining, Amherst was whistled for a foul, their 18th of the game, which set Schonberg up for a free kick on Trinity's side of the field.  The keeper booted a hail mary with a slew of Bantams crowding Amherst territory, and senior co-captain Wesley Updike (Cambridge, Mass.) managed to trap the ball, turn and fire a hard shot, but it sailed high and wide of the net, which was the last test of the day for the Lord Jeffs, who remain undefeated on the season.

Amherst senior co-captain Leonard Kovacs (Wolfersdorf, Germany) needed just one stop for the shutout in his eighth win of the year in net, while Schonberg finished the game with four saves for the Bantams, two in each half.  Amherst out-tallied the Bantams, 7-4, in shots.
