Clermont, Fla. – A no-hitter by senior Kristen
Anderson (West Haven, Conn.) and an offensive attack of 16 runs
combined gave the Trinity College Bantams an 8-0 win over the
University of Southern Maine Huskies and an 8-7 win over Buffalo
State in softball action today at the National Training
Center. Trinity improves to 5-3 with the wins.
Anderson walked the very first batter she faced and allowed just
one other base-runner against the Huskies, but was otherwise
perfect en route to the team's first no-hitter in four
years. The offense scored all Anderson needed, picking up a
2-0 lead in the opening frame, highlighted by a 2-run double by
senior co-captain Nicole Nardella (Beverly, Mass.), who later added
a homerun to finish with four RBI in the game.
Nerves did not lower in Game 2, as the Bantams, riding the
momentum of Anderson's Game 1 gem, built an 8-1 lead over
Buffalo State in Game 2, but nearly lost it late in the
game. Buffalo State posted a six-run rally with just
two outs remaining in the final inning. Trinity starter
junior Katherine Poulos (Wilton, Conn.) picked up a crucial
strikeout before walking sophomore Sam Strapson (Williamsville,
N.Y.) and allowing a two-RBI single to Kaylee Lekki (N. Tonawanda,
N.Y.), who advanced to second on a throw to the plate. With
Lekki sitting just 180-feet from home plate on second base, Poulos
extinguished the red hot Buffalo bats by inducing a game-ending
flyout, capping Trinity's third straight win in
Florida. Sophomore Caroline Blanchard (Norwich, Conn.) came
up a homerun shy of the cycle, and added a walk, three RBI, and two
runs scored in the game.
The Game 1 no-hitter by Anderson was the first of her career,
and the first since Gabrielle Sergi pitched a one-walk no-hitter in
a 10-0 win over Thomas College on March 22, 2007. Poulos
pitched a one-hitter in a 2-0 shutout over Buena Vista earlier in
the week.
