Box Score Brunswick, Maine - Molly Popolizio scored the game-winning goal
with 14:51 remaining to lift the Bowdoin College Polar Bear women's
soccer team to a 2-1 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams
this afternoon. The Polar Bears improve to 10-3 overall and
6-3 in the NESCAC with the win and clinches the No. 4 seed for the
upcoming NESCAC Tournament. Trinity drops to 4-7-1 overall and
3-6-0 in the league and is in a battle for the No. 8 spot
in the conference tournament entering the final week of action.
Bowdoin wasted little time getting on the board Saturday as
Alexa Yurick accepted a cross from Stacie Sammott and put home the
game's first goal just five minutes into the contest. The Polar
Bears held a 8-4 edge in shots in the opening half and carried
their one-goal lead through intermission.
Trinity evened the tally early in the second half as Elisa Dolan
ripped a shot from outside the box that banged off the cross bar
and straight down, trickling over the goal line in the 50th minute
to tie the contest at one apiece.
Bowdoin's game-winner came after a string of consecutive chances
for the hosts. Sarah Wallace controlled the ball on the wing and
served a perfect cross into the box to Popolizio, who buried the
go-ahead goal in the 76th minute to put the Polar Bears on top.
Trinity had a handful of late chances, including a corner kick
with under two minutes to play, but could not find the game-tying
score. Bridget McCarthy made the lead stand with six saves for
Bowdoin, including four in the second half. Monica DiFiori made
four stops for Trinity.
The Bantams will close out their regular season at home on
Tuesday against Wesleyan. The Polar Bears will finish at Tufts on
Tuesday as well. Both games are slated for 3 p.m. starts.
