New London, Conn. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams dropped
an 8-4 decision against the United States Coast Guard Academy Bears
in softball action this afternoon. Trinity falls to 6-5,
losing its first game in New England after five doubleheaders on
Central Florida last week. Coast Guard, ranked No. 23 in the
nation, improves to 12-7.
Trinity took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first as
sophomore OF Christina Galese (Fairfield, N.J.) and freshman
Haley Lang led (Concord, Mass.) off with back-to-back singles.
Galese came around on a wild pitch while Yang scored on an RBI
single by sophomore Abigail Ostrom (Carlisle, Mass.). Coast
Guard responded with three runs in the home half as Hollie Bastinck
had an RBI single before Chloe Harmon delivered a two-run double
for the 3-2 lead. The Bears added two more runs in the second
on an RBI double by senior Maddie Buchert, who later scored on an
error.
Trinity cut the deficit to 5-4 in the third as Ostrom led off
with a triple and scored on an error before an RBI ground out by
junior Amelia Mostovoy (San Francisco, Calif.). Coast Guard
added a run in third as freshman Kelsey Gray led off with a double
and scored on a ground out by freshman Erin Lisko for a 6-4
lead. The Bears closed the scoring in the sixth on RBI
singles by Jesse Richardson and Bastinck. Trinity threatened
in the seventh by loading the bases with nobody out, but junior
Catherine Walker got the complete game win with a strike out and a
line out double play to end the game.
Walker allowed 11 hits and two earned runs while walking four
and striking out five in the win. Freshman Katerina Kolbe
(Washington, D.C.) fell to 3-2, going the first three innings
for Trinity and allowing seven hits and six runs, five earned, with
a walk. Richardson was 3-for-3 while Bastinck and Harmon each
drove in two runs for Coast Guard. Sophomore Devin Fellman
also had two hits for the Bears. Senior Katherine Poulos had
three hits to lead Trinity while Galese, Yang and Ostrom each added
two hits in the loss.
