Katherine Poulos (Wilton, Conn.) allowed six hits
and struck out four as the Trinity College Bantams bounced back
from a 4-2 loss to open the day with a 5-1 victory in Game 2, as
the Bantams opened a three-game series against Bates in NESCAC East
softball action this afternoon. Trinity moved to 7-6 on the
year, while Bates moved to 5-5 overall. It was the first
league action of the year for both teams, sharing a 1-1 record in
the NESCAC standings.
Bates held a 2-0 lead for much of Game 1, until sophomore
Claire Prosperi (Northbrook, Ill.) delivered a
pinch-hit 2-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game a
2-2. Bates quickly took the lead back, scoring a run in each
of the final two innings, as senior Kristen Finn (Winthrop,
Mass.) prevented the Bantams from scoring another run in
the game, as the Bobcats started NESCAC play with a 4-2 win.
Bates jumped on top, 1-0, in the third inning of Game 2 when
senior Kelly McManus (Plymouth, N.H.) delivered an
RBI on one of her three hits in the game. Back-to-back
doubles by Christina Galese (Fairfield, N.J.) and
junior Caroline Blanchard (Norwich, Conn.) tied
the game at 1-1 in the Trinity third, before the Bantams would go
on to score two more runs in the frame, as Prosperi and junior
Kerry McCarthy (Andover, Mass.) drew back-to-back
bases loaded walks to increase Trinity's lead to 5-1.
Trinity tacked on two more in the fourth on a two-run shot by
sophomore Abby Ostrom (Carlisle, Mass.).
Poulos allowed just two hits in the final four innings to close out
the win for the Bantams.
Trinity will face Bates again tomorrow, before traveling to
Tufts, ranked No. 1 in New England and No. 23 nationally, on Fri.
April 6 at 4 p.m.
