John Froats (Yorktown, N.Y.) notched three goals
and three assists to lead the visiting Wesleyan University
Cardinals to a 12-8 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in New
England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's
lacrosse action this afternoon on Jessee/Miller Field.
Trinity, ranked No. 5 in New England and No. 15 in the nation,
drops to 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the NESCAC, while the Cardinals,
ranked No. 8 in New England, improve to 9-3 overall and 5-3 in the
league.
Wesleyan rattled off five straight goals after Trinity freshman
attackman Jack Castelli (Huntington, N.Y.) tied
the game at 7-7 with 6:30 left in the third quarter, faking high
and shooting low past Wesleyan senior tri-captain goalie
Grant Covington (Gloucester, Mass.) from close on
the left wing off a feed by junior middie Nick Shaheen
(Williamsburg, Mass.). Cardinal senior midfielder
Ted Citrin (New Canaan, Conn.) netted the
game-winner with 2:10 left in the third, converting on an assist by
sophomore defenseman Elliot Albert (Narbeth, Pa.)
who had carried the ball the length of the field. Froats recorded
his sixth point 12:02 into the fourth quarter, feeding sophomore
Joe Porcelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) for a goal,
and three different Cardinals scored over the next 10
minutes. Trinity junior attackman Jeff Hebert
(Cornwall, Ontario) broke a 20:26 scoring drought for the
Bantams with an unassisted tally at 1:04 in the fourth to close out
the scoring.
The teams had traded goals until early in the second quarter
when sophomore midfielder Aidan Daniell (Hopkinton,
N.H.) gave the Cardinals a two-goal edge at 4-2 with a
goal from Froats with 12:50 left before halftime. Trinity
junior midfielder Matt Cohen (East Lyme, Conn.)
answered with his second goal of the game with 6:15 on the clock,
before Froats ended the first-half scoring with an unassisted score
with 3:16 on the clock.
Castelli, Cohen, and junior midfielder Steve Manning
(Tyngsboro, Mass.) scored twice for Trinity, while Shaheen
assisted on two goals, and junior face-off man T.J.
Cholnoky (Greenwich, Conn.) won 11 of his 13 opportunities
while leading the Bantams with four ground balls. Daniell and
Citrin joined Froats as hat trick scorers for Wesleyan, while
junior LSM Brendan Hanley (Rockville Centre, N.Y.)
totaled three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Covington made 14 saves and Trinity senior captain backstop
Peter Johnson (Riverside, Conn.) had six
stops. Trinity outshot Wesleyan, 36-to-27, and held a
27-to-13 advantage on ground balls, but committed 22 turnovers.
