Trinity Men's Soccer Takes Home Opener Against Worcester State

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – Junior Will Stankiewicz (Townsend, Mass.) scored two goals to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Worcester State University Lancers in men's soccer action this afternoon.  Trinity, ranked No. 6 in New England, improves to 2-0 with the win in its home opener and avenges a 1-0 loss to the Lancers in Worcester last fall.

"It was a good mid-week win for us," says Trinity Head Coach Mike Pilger (9th Season).  "Sometimes it's tough to flip the switch from the classroom to the field easily when you don't even have the window of travelling.  We struggled for parts of the game as a few guys were fighting that, and the guys weren't talking as much as we like either. We were able to play a lot of people, many of whom played very well, and got the starters some rest heading into this weekend's double header weekend.  All in all, 4-1 is a good result."

After some early saves from close range by Worcester State freshman goalie Nick Zucco (Ludlow, Mass.), Trinity sophomore forward Timothy Shea (Somerset, Mass.) was tackled in the box to give the Bantams a penalty kick. Senior captain midfielder Anthony El-Hachem (Vernon, Conn.), took the try and beat Zucco with a low shot in the 20th minute.  Bantam junior forward Julian Gocksch (Centerport, N.Y.) netted an unassisted goal on a rebound with just under four minutes left before intermission, and Stankiewicz scored his first of the day when he beat Zucco to the ball after a pass over the Lancer defense by sophomore back Alex Perkins (Kingston, Jamaica) and punched it past the keeper with 51 seconds on the clock.

Worcester State got on the board on its first shot of the game just under five minutes after the break, as freshman forward Alex Goncalves (Ludlow, Mass.) tallied an unassisted goal.  Stankiewicz completed the scoring with a goal from sophomore forward Max Oppenheimer (Plymouth, Minn.).  Trinity sophomore GK Jason Katz (Middleton, Mass.) played the first half, but did not record a save before yielding to junior GK James Ciano (Syosset, N.Y.) who stopped one Lancer shot.  The Bantam defense, led by junior captains Shaun McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) and Zachary Packer (North Attleboro, Mass.), helped the Bantams outshoot the Lancers, 14-3.  Zucco finished with five saves in the Worcester State goal.
