Box Score Lewiston, Maine - There was plenty of action in a well-played
and even game between the Bates College Bobcat and the visiting
Trinity College Bantam men's soccer teams this afternoon at Russell
Street Field, but no goals scored, leaving the New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rivals with a 0-0 tie to show
for all their effort. Trinity moves to 2-1-1 overall and
1-1-1 in the NESCAC, while Bates is now 1-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in
the league.
With each side generating its fair share of scoring chances, Bates
outshot Trinity by a 21-14 margin, including a 4-0 edge in the
first overtime period, when the Bobcats had the wind at their
backs. The teams switched ends for the final 10-minute
overtime, and both sides got off two shots apiece, though the
Bantams tested Bates first-year goalie Zach Shabman, forcing him to
make two saves to preserve the stalemate.
Shabman made five saves in all to earn his first collegiate
shutout, a 110-minute one at that. Meanwhile, Trinity junior goalie
James Ciano (Syosset, N.Y.) was credited with eight saves in his
shutout effort. Trinity was whistled for 22 fouls to Bates'
nine, and the Bantams were yellow-carded three times in the
contest. Junior forward Jason Symonette (Philadelphia, Pa.)
put both of his two shot attempts on goal for Trinity, and
classmate Alex Harvey (Lakeville, Conn.) led the Bantams with three
shots taken. For Bates, Ethan Hirshberg put two of his five shots
on goal, and John Murphy put two of his four attempts on net.
