Box Score 2 Hartford, Conn. – The visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears
swept a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East
Division softball doubleheader this afternoon against the Trinity
College Bantams, 6/9-5/1, to win the weekend's three-game
series. The Bantams, which won yesterday's series
opener, 1-0, drops to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in the NESCAC East, while
Bowdoin improves to 13-6 overall and 2-1 in the division.
Bowdoin took a 5-0 lead early in the first game on a two-run homer
by senior co-captain OF Gen Barlow (Norwich, Conn.) in the first
inning and solo shot by senior Toni DaCampo (Woburn, Mass.)
followed by an two-run blast by first-year 1B Katie Gately
(Rehoboth, Mass.) in the third inning. Trinity got two runs back in
the bottom of the fourth frame when senior tri-captain 1B Kerry
McCarthy (Andover, Mass.) singled and scored with sophomore 2B
Miranda Riendeau-Card (Bowdoinham, Maine) on a throwing error.
In the fifth frame, Trinity first-year 3B Erica Correa (Glen Rock,
N.J.) delivered a two-run double to make the score, 5-4, but
Bowdoin answered with a run-scoring double by sophomore C Casey
Correa (Stamford, Conn.) in the top of the sixth. Bantam
freshman OF Elizabeth McQuaid (Lowell, Mass.) led off the bottom of
the seventh inning with a triple and scored on an RBI single by
junior C Abby Ostrom (Carlisle, Mass.), but Ostrom was left
stranded.
Sophomore Nancy Walker (Alexandria, Va.) was the winning pitcher
for Bowdoin, allowing five hits and one earned run with three
strikeouts over six innings, while classmate Melissa DellaTorre
(Scarborough, Maine), fresh off a one-hitter in a losing effort
yesterday, recorded a save in the seventh despite some
trouble. Bantam freshman RHP Amanda Feldman (Natick, Mass.)
was solid in relief in the circle, yielding five hits and one run
over 4.1 innings of work. Ostrom finished 3-for-4 for the
Bantam offense, and Barlow and Correa both had two hits for
Bowdoin.
Game two featured plenty of offense from the Polar Bears, led by
DaCampo who hit two doubles, a triple, scored two runs and knocked
in two RBI. Dicampo started the game with a double and
Bowdoin jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Trinity and Bowdoin
each recorded run-scoring sacrifice flyouts in the third inning,
making the score, 3-1, in favor of the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin separated themselves with two runs in the fourth, three in
the fifth, and a run in the sixth. DellaTorre held the
Trinity offense at bay over those same innings, ending the
mercy-rule shortened second game with a perfect inning to improve
to 5-2 on the year. DellaTorre allowed four hits and struck
out three in the complete game performance. Walker recorded a
three-hit performance for the Polar Bears, who totaled 14 hits in
the game. Feldman took a complete-game loss for the
Bantams.
