Late Cohen Goal Gives Trinity Men's Lacrosse Win Over Bowdoin

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – Senior Matt Cohen (East Lyme, Conn.) scored a hat trick, including the game-winning goal with four seconds on clock, to give Trinity a key 10-9 win over the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action this afternoon on Jessee/Miller Field.  Trinity improves to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the league and Bowdoin drops to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the league.

Trinity led 9-5 with 6:46 showing on the clock, but consecutive goals by the Polar Bears brought Bowdoin within two.  With the score at 9-7 in favor of Trinity, Bowdoin junior Franklin Reis (Hampton Falls, N.H.) scored with 3:09 remaining, and struck again with his third goal of the game with just 1:09 showing on the clock, knotting the game at 9-9.

As the clock ticked down, Cohen handled the ball in front of the Bowdoin cage, and worked his way to the far left side of the net before rifling off a shot that squeezed its way into the goal, for what would be the game-winning score with four seconds remaining.  At the sound of the final whistle, Trinity celebrated their first league win of the season on field.

It was a tightly contested battle throughout.  Trinity and Bowdoin went back-and-forth in the first period, and were tied 3-3 after the opening stanza.  Reis started the second with a goal, giving the Polar Bears a 4-3 lead, but the Bantams went on a 4-0 scoring run to create some separation in the second and third quarters.  Bowdoin scored late in the third, before Trinity opened the fourth with back-to-back goals to take a 9-5 lead.  Bowdoin gave the home crowd a scare with four straight goals to tie the game, before Cohen extinguished the Polar Bear momentum with his late goal.

Sophomore goalie Makar Zaverucha (Duxbury, Mass.) made 19 saves to earn his first career collegiate victory in net for Trinity, while Bowdoin senior Christopher Williamson (Winnetka, Ill.) made 18 saves in goal for the Polar Bears.
