Box Score Worcester, Mass. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams erupted for three goals in the second half for a 4-1 victory over the Worcester State University Lancers in men's soccer action this evening on Coughlin Field. Trinity improves to 2-0 with its second 4-1 win over Worcester State in as many years, while the Lancers remain winless at 0-3-1.
"Tonight's was as good a passing performance as we have had in a long time," said Trinity Head Coach Mike Pilger. "Captains Shaun McGann and Zach Packer and goalie James Ciano organized the defense just as we want our seniors to do. It was fun to watch."
The Bantams got out to the early 1-0 lead in the 29th minute of play when senior fiorward Will Stankiewicz (Townsend, Mass.) broke free from the defense and let loose a rocket from 15 yards out for his first goal of the season. Trinity maintained the one-goal cushion the rest of the first half despite outshooting the Lancers, 10-1, and attempting five corner kicks while defending none.
First-year Cody Savonen (Orleans, Mass.) made it a two-goal advantage for the Bantams when he blasted a shot into the back of the net from 15 yards away at the 49:59 mark for his second goal in two games. Just under five minutes later, Trinity senior forward Christian Carrasquillo (Manchester, Conn.) increased the lead when he corraled a free kick attempt at the top of the box and connected from the left side of the net for a 3-0 lead.
Worcester State got on the board in the 58th minute when senior Alex Wolfel (Unionville, Conn.) registered his team-leading fourth goal of the campaign when he received a middle cross off a breakaway by classmate Brian Cormier (Hudson, Mass.) and fired it across the goal line for the 3-1 score. Trinity added another goal in the 68th minute when junior forward Timothy Shea (Somerset, Mass.) headed home a free kick from first-year Mike Cooke (Boston, Mass.) for the game's the final score.
The Bantams outshot the hosts, 24-6, for the contest and also held the 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Trinity senior backstop James Ciano (Syosset, N.Y.) was not called upon to make a save as he earned his first win of the season, whie Nick Zucco (Ludlow, Mass.) recorded four stops for Worcester State.
