Box Score Hartford, Conn. – Led by a balanced attack, the Trinity College Bantams sailed to a 7-0 win over the Westfield State University Owls in men's soccer action this afternoon on Campus Field. Trinity moves to 4-0 overall and the Owls drop to 2-4 on the season.
It didn't take long for Trinity to take the lead, or for first-year forward Cody Savonen (Orleans, Mass.) to keep his scoring streak going, as the rookie netted a goal less than six minutes into the contest to put the Bantams on top for good. Savonen has now scored in all four of Trinity's matches.
The Bantams kept the pressure on against a fast and scrappy Westfield team, netting three more goals in the first half, including two from rookie midfielder Tobias Gimand (Fairfield, Conn.), who also picked up an assist in the game. Senior Will Stankiewicz (Townsend, Mass.) scored late in the first half to send Trinity into the intermission with a 4-0 lead.
Trinity did not step off the pedal in the second half, posting three goals in the frame, courtesy of senior Wesley Simon (New Hope, Pa.), and two by junior Timothy Shea (Somerset, Mass.).
With a staunch defensive line in front of him, Trinity junior goalkeeper Jason Katz (Middleton, Mass.) needed just two stops in the game for the shutout in his first start of the season. It is his fifth career shutout in 12 starts. Westfield senior goalie Joe Pinto (Fairhaven, Mass.) finished the game with two stops in net for the Owls.
Trinity's seven goals were the most scored by the Bantams since Sept. 17, 2008, exactly five years ago to the day, in a 7-1 win over Mitchell College. Since that date, Trinity has scored more than three goals in a single game just three times, and had not scored more than five in a game over that span. Westfield State and Trinity had traded 1-0 games over the past two seasons, prior to today's game. Westfield State last topped Trinity, 1-0, in the 2011-12 season, a year that included an NCAA National Tournament appearance by the Bantams.
