Box Score Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College men's soccer team erupted for four goals en route to a 4-1 non-conference victory versus in-state rival Western Connecticut State on Wednesday at Campus Field. The Bantams remained perfect in out of league tilts and improved to 6-4-2 on the year, while the Colonials dropped their second straight game to fall to 5-8-1.
"We came out ready to play," said Trinity Head Coach Mike Pilger. " We had a few things we wanted to address, such as our spacing, and to see success in the first minute and to score three first-half goals is obviously nice. They gave us great games the last few years so we needed that. Plus some guys who don't see a ton of minutes really impressed today. Danny Reich ad Kellen Self to name a couple. It was great to see."
Trinity senior co-captain Tim Shea (Somerset, Mass.) had his strongest game of the year scoring two goals and adding an assist for a season-high five points. Sophomore midfielder Tobias Gimand (Fairfield, Conn.) netted a goal and added a helper, and sophomore Dan O'Neil (North Potomac, Md.) had the other Bantams tally.
Senior goalkeeper Jason Katz (Middleton, Mass.) got the win for Trinity and did not face a shot in the first half. Sophomore Domenic Quade (Norwood, Mass.) came on in relief of Katz after halftime and turned aside two of the three shots he faced. On the opposite end, freshman Austin Tierney was saddled with the loss allowing three goals in the first half, while stopping five shots. In the second half, freshman Lennart van't Kruis entered the game between the pipes and stopped three shots.
Freshman midfielder Eammon D'Arcy scored his second career goal to put the Colonials on the board.
Trinity jumped out to an early lead as Gimad scored his fourth goal of the season less than a minute into the game. Later in the first half O'Neil netted his first marker of the season and Shea closed out the scoring in the opening half with his fifth goal of 2014.
In the second half, Shea scored his second goal to give Trinity a 4-0 lead before D'Arcy put the visitors on the board.
Trinity held a 26-6 advantage in shots and took eight corner kicks to the Colonials two.
Trinity returns to action next Wednesday, Oct. 22, with a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) road contest versus Wesleyan. The match with the Cardinals is slated to get underway at 3:00 p.m.
