Trinity Women's Ice Hockey Opens Southern Maine Series With Win

Box Score

Gorham, Maine - Junior forward Cheeky Herr (Princeton, N.J.) scored the first of her two goals 13 seconds into the game as the visiting Trinity College Bantams defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 4-1, this evening in the first game of a two-game series at the USM Ice Arena.  The win evened the Bantams' overall record at 2-2-1.  The Huskies dropped their second straight game to slide to 2-5-1 overall.

Herr deposited a pass from senior Lucy Robinson (Toronto, Ontario) into the net to finish off a 2-on-1 in the opening seconds, giving the visitors a lead they would never relinquish.  Off the opening faceoff, rookie Tasha Adams (Reston, Va.) banked a pass off the boards to send Robinson and Herr into the offensive zone.  Robinson held the puck, drawing the attention of USM senior goalie Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.), and the lone defender before sliding the puck across to Herr.  The goal was the fastest ever allowed by the Huskies at the start of a game (or any period) in the 17-year history of the program.  The Bantams added a second marker before the period was 10 minutes old.  Rookie Kelcie Finn (Weymouth, Mass.) beat Bergstrom from 30 feet out in the slot through a screen for her second goal of the season. Robinson and Herr picked up the assists on the play.

Adams got her first collegiate goal at the midpoint of the second period, as her shot from the blue line found its way through a maze of players in front of Bergstrom.  Robinson earned her third assist of the game on the play.  Southern Maine got on the board at 16:11 of the period as sophomore Katie Couture (Harrisville, R.I.) scored her third goal of the season. Couture took a drop pass from junior Chelsea Boucher (Gilford, N.H.) and whipped a 30-foot wrist shot by Trinity rookie goaltender Sydney Belinskas (Port Orange, Fla.) into the top left corner.  Junior Cassandra Sherman (North Smithfield, R.I.) picked up the second assist.

Herr added the final marker to the scoring line with 14 seconds remaining in the game. Belinskas' provided steady goaltending for Bantams, stopping 16 shots in her collegiate debut.  Bergstrom finished with 23 saves as the Bantams out shot the Huskies 27-17. The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
