Box Score Westfield, Mass. – Sophomore forward Cody Savonen (Orleans, Mass.) netted two goals to lead Trinity past Westfield State, 2-0, on Tuesday evening in non-conference action at Alumni Field. The win was the third straight for the Bantams against the Owls as the visitors improved to 3-1-1 and Westfield State fell to 1-4-1.
Savonen's first career multi-goal game helped Trinity bounce back from its first defeat of the season last weekend. The second-year striker opened the scoring in the 39th minute and added his second tally in the 78th minute off a free kick after a Westfield handball. He finished his first goal off a cross from the right side using his toe to slip the ball past Owls goalkeeper Keith Harvey and his second from the top of the 18-yard box to the far post. Sophomore Mike Cooke (Boston, Mass.) and classmate Tobias Gimand (Fairfield, Conn.) set up the first goal of the game. The assists were the first of the year for each.
First-year Mateo Zabala (Paterson, N.J.) and sophomore Domenic Quade (Norwood, Mass.) played well between the pipes for Trinity combining for the team's second shutout of the season. Zabala got the start and turned aside one shot in 80 minutes of action and Quade made in save in relief. On the opposite side, Harvery stopped three shots in a losing effort for Westfield State.
The Bantams outshot the Owls, 13-7, while Westfield State held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Trinity returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, hosting Colby in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). The Bantams have won three straight versus the Mules and will be looking for their first league win of 2014.
