Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore Mario Yanez Tapia
(Aguascalientes, Mexico) came back from a 2-1 deficit to win the
deciding match, 3-2, leading the University of Rochester
Yellowjackets to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Trinity College
Bantams in men's squash action this afternoon at Lyman
Center. Trinity, ranked No. 1 nationally, falls to 11-1 with
its first loss to an NCAA Division III opponent since a 7-2 setback
at Amherst in 1995-96. No. 5-ranked Rochester improves to 7-3
with its second win in a row.
Trinity trailed, 2-1, after the first wave, receiving a 3-0 win
by first-year Omar Allaudin (Lahore, Pakistan) at the No. 9 spot
but losing points in the No. 3 and No. 6 matches. Bantam
junior Juan Vargas (Bogota, Colombia) was forced to retire down,
1-0, with an injury in the No. slot. The Yellowjackets went
ahead, 3-1, on a 3-0 win by Ryosei Kobayashi (Yokohama, Japan) in
the No. 2 position, but the Bantams answered with three consecutive
wins by rookie Rick Penders (Maastricht, England), 3-0, at No. 5,
sophomore Affeeq Ismail (Kuching, Malaysia), 3-1, at No. 8, and
freshman James Evans (Maidstone, England), 3-0, at No. 7 to take a
4-3 lead with two matches remaining.
Rochester freshman Tomataka Endo (Kawasaki, Japan) secured an
extremely close triumph over Bantam senior co-captain Karan Malik
(Bangalore, India) at No. 4, winning 17-15, in the opening game,
11-8, in the second game, and 11-9, in the fourth game to tie the
match score at 4-4. Tapia won the clincher, 9-11, 11-7, 9-11,
11-3, 11-4 over Trinity senior Vrishab Kotian (Mumbai, India)
who succumbing to an injury late in the second game, but came back
to win the third.
