Box Score Middletown, Conn. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams fell, 13-7, to the Wesleyan University Cardinals in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action this afternoon, dropping to 4-8 overall and 2-6 in league play with their second setback in a row. Wesleyan improves to 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
The teams traded early goals, as senior tri-captain attackman Matt Hauck (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored for the Bantams before Wesleyan went ahead for good thanks to a tally by freshman Taylor Ghesquierre with 32 seconds left in the opening period. Wesleyan went on to score the next three goals, but senior tri-captain James O'Connell (Middleton, Mass.) answered for Trinity with 5:42 left in the first half. A Wesleyan penalty moments later gave Trinity a chance to steal the momentum, but the Cardinal man-down held the Bantams at bay and the home squad finished the half with a 6-2 edge. The Cardinals then outscored the Bantams 6-1 in the third period to extend their lead to 12-3 before Trinity rallied with four of the game's final five scores for a 13-7 final count.
The Bantams received three goals from O'Connell, who is now tied for second on the squad in goals with 18 this year, and a pair of markers from freshman Jack Stallman (Barrington, R.I.) late in the game. Hauck had a goal and an assist to up his team-best seasonal scoring to 34 points with 27 goals and seven helpers. Trinity senior Mickey Zaverucha (Duxbury, Mass.) played the first three periods with 11 saves and 12 goals against. Minding the net for the final stanza was senior Riley Cahill (Glastonbury, Conn.), who had three stops while yielding the final Cardinal tally.
