Box Score Worcester, Mass. – For the fourth straight year, the Trinity College men's soccer team opened the season with a victory as the Bantams beat Worcester State, 3-1, in a non-conference game at John F. Coughlin Memorial Field on Tuesday night. Trinity struck first at the 16:47 mark as junior forward Cody Savonen (Orleans, Mass.) scored his first of two goals on the night via a through ball from just outside the box by junior midfielder and captain, Tobias Gimand (Fairfield, Conn.). Both Bantam goalkeepers, sophomore Mateo Zabala (Paterson, N.J.) and junior Domenic Quade (Norwood, Mass.) saw action between the pipes, holding the Lancers to just one goal on nine shots.
Trinity's offensive attack kept Worcester State goalie Tim Schmidt busy all evening, taking 17 shots, 12 of which were on goal. The Bantams also created eight corner kick opportunities while Worcester State only had three.
After Savonen's goal early in the first half, Trinity went up 2-0 due to an own goal by Worcester State after a miscommunication between Schmidt and the Lancer defense. Savonen would add one more goal around the 65 minute mark, scoring after intercepting a Worcester State pass, dribbling through the back line, and sending a shot to the upper right hand side of the net. Joshua Evans scored the lone goal for Worcester State late in the second half on a direct kick from 35 yards out.
Zabala got the start in goal for the Bantams, making two saves in 69 minutes of play to earn his first victory on the season. Quade came on for Zabala and played for the remaining 21 minutes, allowing the lone Lancer goal. For Worcester State, Schmidt played the entire game allowing all three Bantam goals and stopping nine shots.
Trinity returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 9th, as they take on Rivier in their 2015 home opener. Game time is set for 4:30 P.M.
