Box Score Middletown, Conn. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams won their second New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's soccer game in as many days, downing the Wesleyan University Cardinals, 2-1, on the road this afternoon at Jackson Field. Trinity breaks even for the season at 4-4 and improves to 2-4 in the conference, while the Cardinals drop to 4-4-1 overall and 1-4 in the league.
Trinity took a 2-0 lead, beginning with an early goal by senior captain forward Sam Milbury (Peabody, Mass.) in the fourth minute. First-year forward Henry Farr (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) fed the ball from the middle of the field forward and to his left to leave Milbury with a clear path to the back of the net. In the 14th minute, Milbury drew a foul in the box and senior captain midfielder Oliver Murphy (Montclair, N.J.) drilled home the penalty kick for 2-0 Trinity lead. Wesleyan put heavy pressure on the Bantams defense in the final third of the first half, as Trinity senior goalkeeper Domenic Quade (Norwood, Mass.) had to leave his feet three times to make saves over a 10-minute span shortly before intermission.
Wesleyan goalie Jack Katkavich made a pair of diving stops on shots by Bantam seniors Fernando Cuervo-Torello (Arlington, Mass.) and Tobias Gimand (Copenhagen, Denmark), while Milbury had a clear look from the right wing after a perfect pass by Gimand but misfired high in the 50th minute. Cardinal senior Charlie Gruner played a corner kick quickly over Quade's head in the 62nd minute, but the Bantam backstop was able to get a hand on the ball and poke it over the cross bar.
The home team got on the board with 18:03 left to play when first-year Alec Haas '20 took a Taylor Chin '18 throw in and lifted the ball in over Quade's head. Farr nearly gave Trinity an insurance goal late but shot wide after getting past the Cardinal back line on the left flank, and senior forward Dan O'Neil (North Potomac, Md.) hit the post with a shot from straight on in traffic 10 yards away. Shots were even at 15-all, but the Bantam defense did not yield a Wesleyan shot after the Cardinal goal. Wesleyan held a sizable advantage in corner kicks at 10-1. Katkavich made three saves, while Quade finished with five.
