Strong Third Quarter Powers Men's Lacrosse Past Emmanuel

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. - After taking a 5-3 lead into the half, the Trinity College men's lacrosse team scored five times in the third quarter en route to a 12-6 victory on Sunday afternoon over the Emmanuel College Saints at Jessee/Miller Field in Hartford. The Bantams improve to 2-3 overall with the win while the Saints fall to 1-4 on the season. Trinity returns to action on Saturday, March 25th, when it travels to Medford to face the No. 3-ranked Tufts University Jumbos in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) matchup.

Nine different players netted at least one goal for the Bantams in the victory. Trinity was led offensively by sophomore Ben MacShane (Concord, Mass.) who finished with a pair of goals and two assists. Junior Jack Stallman (Barrington, R.I.) also scored twice to go along with an assist while rookie Matt Gardiner (Potomac, Md.) dished out a pair of helpers. Senior Reid McCool (Gulf Stream, Fla.) and freshman Daniel McEntee (Manhasset, N.Y.) led all players with five ground balls each in a game in which Trinity dominated the 50/50 balls. Junior Woody Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass.) picked up his second win of the season with a solid performance between the pipes, finishing with 10 saves on the afternoon.

Emmanuel was paced by Ben Hartig-Orr (Reading, Vt.) and Donnie Litzelman (Stratham, N.H.) who both scored twice. Tony Cibelli (Westboro, Mass.) led all players with three assists for the Saints while starting goalie Austin Rosenberg (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) tallied 12 stops.

Litzelman opened the day's scoring, 5:55 into the opening quarter to give Emmanuel the 1-0 lead, its only of the day. After ten minutes without a goal, MacShane netted his first of the game, followed just 1:25 later by the first career score from first-year Morty Fearey (Duxbury, Mass.) to give the Bantams a 2-1 lead.

Both teams traded goals in the second quarter before junior Jack Sharrio (Marblehead, Mass.) scored with just 20 seconds remaining before halftime to put the Bantams ahead, 5-3 entering the break. Trinity sophomore Scott Morgan (Grand Rapids, Mich.) went 9-for-15 in the faceoff circle, highlighted by five second quarter faceoff wins.

Hartig-Orr and Litzelman opened the third quarter with consecutive goals to tie things at 5-5. Trinity proved unfazed, rattling off five unanswered goals to open up a 10-5 lead after three. Stallman, Gardiner and MacShane all scored once in the third frame, as did junior Matt Barker (Sudbury, Mass.) and sophomore Matt Picard (Lyme, Conn.).

Saint junior Charlie Moran (Maitland, Fla.) scored Emmanuel's final goal of the game at the 11:12 mark in the fourth quarter before MacShane assisted on a Max Herman (San Francisco, Calif.) goal and Stallman's second score of the day to account for the 12-6 final.
