Trinity sophomore starter Alex Shafer (Baltimore, Md.) did not allow an earned run but errors proved costly as the Red Dragons opened up an early, 8-0 lead after one. Trinity held the powerful Cortland offense to one run for the next three innings, until the SUNY Cortland offense exploded in the 5th inning, accumulating six runs, highlighted by a double down the left field line by the pinch hitter Wyatt Myers.
The SUNY Cortland pitchers left the Trinity offense with only one run, three hits, and five walks in 27 at bats. The lone Bantam run came in the 5th inning as first-year Eric Thronson (McLean, Va.) reached on a fielding error in his first collegiate appearance at the plate, followed by senior Ryan Vultaggio (Vero Beach, Fla.) driving the ball to left field for a single. Senior Matt Toth (New Canaan, Conn.) advanced Thronson and Vultaggio as he sent the right fielder to the warning track with a fly ball out. Junior Geoff Stillman (Scituate, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to the right field to score Thronson for the only recorded RBI of the afternoon, but left Vultaggio stranded on third.
