HARTFORD, Conn. – John Mesagno hit a two-run homer in the top of the 10
th to lead No. 2-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University to a 10-5 win over the Trinity College baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at DiBenedetto Stadium. The Bantams slide to 8-7 overall while the Warriors improve to 16-2 this season. Trinity resumes action on Murren Family Field this Friday against New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Bowdoin College at 3 p.m. Eastern will face Johnson & Wales University on Thursday at 4 p.m.
The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the first but Trinity responded with four runs over the next two innings with sophomore
Sean Meth (Sands Point, N.Y.) recording an RBI double and senior
Colin Mann (Dedham, Mass.) knocking in an RBI single in the bottom of the first. In the second, sophomore
Jack Mathews (Westport, Conn.) singled to bring in both junior
Brandon Chow (Greenwich, Conn.) and sophomore
James Stefanowicz (Stamford, Conn.) putting the Bantams on top 4-2.
Eastern Connecticut regained the lead in the fifth inning when Ryan Bagdasarian, Luke Broadhust and Matt Malcom all drove in runs but Mathews tied the game at five runs apiece with an RBI double in the sixth inning. The Bantams later had Mathews in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth but Bryan Albee entered the game for Griffin Pontbraint with one out and got the Warriors out of a jam with a groundout and pop out, respectively. In the 10
th, Broadhurst singled on a slow chopper to third and beat out the throw which was then followed by a Mesagno two-run blast over the leftfield fence for the game winning run.
Matt Malcom went 4-for-5 for Eastern with three RBIs while Mathews posted a 3-for-5 day with three RBIs for the Bantams. Tommy Benincaso struck out seven batters over six innings while Bryan Albee secured the win for the Warriors to improve to 6-0 this year. Senior
Cameron Crowley (Downers, Ill.) and sophomore Sean Craven (Wakefield, R.I.) combined for nine strikeouts for Trinity.
