HARTFORD, Conn. — In the 85th minute,
Sadie Rudolph (Weston, Conn.) intercepted a pass and dribbled down the field before launching towards
Elena Lindonen (Boxford, Mass.) to put the Trinity College women's soccer team on the board in the 2-1 loss at home against Tufts University on Sunday. Trinity dipped to 2-2-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, with the Jumbos moved to 4-2-1 and and 2-2-1. The Bantams travel to in-state non-conference foe United States Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. matchup.
Tufts took an early lead just under the five minute mark after back-to-back Trinity fouls as Elsi Aires connected with the net to put the visitors up, 1-0. For 27 minutes, the Jumbos only attempted a pair of shots, as one was blocked and the other was saved by Bantam goalkeeper
Mariana Cournoyer (St. Paul, Minn.), followed by Tufts' second goal by Emily Nichols in the 32nd minute.
The Navy & Gold kept Tufts goalkeeper Gigi Edwards on her toes with six saves in the first half by six different Bantams. Rudolph came close to scoring for Trinity to knot it, 1-1, but the seniors long shot ricocheted off the goal post in the 29th minute. The hosts drilled five shots in the second half before Lindonen's goal, but Edwards stood tall in the net. Cournoyer and Trinity's backfield put pressure on Tufts offense and only allowed six shots, with a pair of saves by the goalkeeper and a nicely blocked shot off the tackle by
Sami Olsen (Cape Elizabeth, Maine).
