HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Eastern Connecticut State University on Thursday afternoon at Trinity Softball Field. The Bantams move to 6-11 overall, while the Warriors now stand at 7-13.
In the opening game, Eastern Connecticut scored five unanswered runs to build a 6-2 lead heading into the fifth inning. Trinity sophomore catcher Isabella Calagna drove in the Bantams' first two runs with a two-run single up the middle. In the bottom of the fifth, graduate Kennedy Rogers doubled to right field, plating two more to trim the deficit to 7-4. However, the Bantams ultimately fell short, dropping the first game 9-4.
Trinity bounced back in game two, bringing more firepower at the plate. The Bantams erupted for five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 5-2 lead. Erin Steed got things started with an RBI double down the right field line, followed by RBI singles from Calagna, Taylor Mikolajczak (2 RBIs), and Rogers.
Eastern answered with two runs in the third inning to make it a one-run game, 5-4. The Bantams responded in the bottom half, with Makenna True driving an RBI single down the left field line, followed by a Calagna sacrifice fly to center field that scored Steed, extending the lead to 7-4.
Trinity added two more runs in the fourth, courtesy of RBI hits from Emily Goddard and True, pushing the lead to 9-4.
In the top of the sixth, with two outs and two runners on, pitcher Annie Konieczka struck out the final batter of the inning to hold the Warriors scoreless. Eastern added one run on a solo home run in the fifth and another on a passed ball in the seventh, but the Bantams held on for a 9-7 victory.
In the circle for game one, sophomore Zofia Sargent pitched a complete game, recording one strikeout, five walks, and allowing 15 hits and nine runs in the loss. Konieczka earned the win in game two, striking out two while inducing 14 flyouts and five groundouts, and allowing seven runs on eight hits.
Trinity returns to action on Sunday, April 13, hosting Middlebury College in a NESCAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
