Middletown, Conn. - Junior forward Christine Card
(Waterbury, Conn.) had a team-high 17 points, seven
rebounds and two blocks, and junior co-captain guard Claire
Arnstein (Hicksville, N.Y.) sank the game-winning free
throws with 13 seconds left on the clock to lead the visiting
Trinity College Bantams to a 55-54 win over the Wesleyan University
Cardinals in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
women's basketball action this afternoon. Trinity improves to
13-1 overall and 2-0 in the NESCAC with its second road win in the
league in as many days and its first win against Wesleyan in the
last nine meetings between the teams dating back to 2001. The
Cardinals drop to 7-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
The game was tied for the last time at 52-52 when Wesleyan
senior Ali Fourney scored on a pair of free throws with 2:56 left
to give her a game-high 24 points. After both teams missed
from the floor, junior Jessica Sims (Peabody,
Mass.) hit one of two at the line to put the
Bantams ahead, 53-52, with 2:12 to go. Each team then missed
twice from the field, making the next points Wesleyan's as grad
student Lucy Sprung converted a pair at the line for a 54-53
Cardinal edge with :29 remaining. Trinity's next possession
resulted in a trip to the line for Arnstein, who put in both her
attempts for a 55-54 Bantam advantage at the :15 mark.
Wesleyan got the ball to Fourney who made a move in the front court
but was stripped of the ball by freshman Michelle Royals
(Torrington, Conn.), earning Royals a trip to the line
with :08.8 showing on the clock. Though she missed both
tries, Card grabbed the rebound as the ball caromed to the
right, giving Trinity the ball. The Bantams played keep-away
for five seconds until another Cardinal foul put junior
Tess Donie (Worcester, MAss.) at the line
with :02.3 to go. She, too, missed a pair but Wesleyan was
unable to do more than get the ball near midcourt before time
expired.
Wesleyan had jumped out to a 7-0 edge at the start of the game
and led throughout the most of first half before the Bantams took
their initial lead at 20-18 on a three-point play by Sims at the
6:46 mark. Wesleyan moved ahead, 26-22, before Card ended the
half with a pair of baskets to knot the contest at 26-26 heading
into the
lockeroom.
Trinity went on a 13-5 run to open the second period, holding
its largest lead of the game at 39-31 (12:31 to go) as Card and
sophomore Molly McGlynn (Sleepy Hollow,
N.Y.) combined for 12 of the 13 Trinity points.
Wesleyan got a three-pointer from Fourney and stayed within six
points before finally tying the game on the Fourney free
throws. Fourney was 7-for-11 from the field and 9-for-12 from
the stripe.
