Somerville, Mass. -- The visiting Trinity College Bantam men's
soccer team posted a 1-0 win over the Tufts University Jumbos in
New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's soccer
action this afternoon at Kraft Field. The Jumbos remain
winless in conference play this season, falling to 0-5-1 in the
league and 2-7-2 overall. The Bantams, ranked No. 2 in New England
and No. 15 nationally and who entered play in second place in the
league, are 5-1-1 in the NESCAC and 9-1-1 overall after their
fourth win in a row.
The Bantams scored early, just 5:54 into the first half, when
junior Peter Marlette (Buffalo, N.Y.) delivered a
centering pass from the right side to first-year Anthony
El-Hachem (Vernon, Conn.). El-Hachem put it by Tufts
senior keeper Pat Tonelli (Andover, Mass.) for the
1-0 Trinity advantage. Tufts managed four shots in the first
half, but no shot was on goal. Tonelli would make two saves in the
half as the Bantams put seven shots towards the goal.
The intensity picked up in the second half with Tufts
aggressively trying to even the score. They were able to put four
shots on goal in the half, but Trinity sophomore keeper
Grant Schonberg (Mendham, N.J.) made all four
saves. Each side picked up a yellow card in the second half
and there were a combined 13 fouls in the half as well. The Bantams
outshot the Jumbos, 16-10, for the match with eight on goal.
Tonelli ended with seven saves in the full 90 minutes of action.
His counterpart Schonberg went the distance as well with the four
second-half saves.
