Hartford, Conn. - The Roger Williams Hawks topped the
Trinity College Bantams 69-61 in the 2009 Courtyard by Marriott
Men's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament final this afternoon at Roger
Williams University. The Bantams fall to 1-1 in the early
goings of the season while the Hawks improve to 3-0 with the win.
With the teams tied at eight apiece to open the game, the Hawks
went on a 29-18 run to close out the half, leading by 11 at the
midway point. Roger Williams held a double digit lead until
Trinity stormed back midway through the second half, cutting the
lead to just three points after a 7-2 run started by a three from
junior Luke MacDougal (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and
ended by a three from first-year Mick Distasio (Yarmouth,
Maine) and a layup by first-year Cameron Sutton
(Queens, N.Y.). The Hawks managed to keep their
lead, preventing the Bantams from having an opportunity to make a
late comeback.
Sophomore Chris Applegate (High Point, N.C.)
scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds and three steals, all
team-highs, to highlight the Trinity stat sheet. Sutton had a
standout game, scoring twelve points to go along with four rebounds
in just his second collegiate game. Applegate and junior
guard Brian Ford (Bronx, N.Y.), who had 24 points
in the semifinal win against Fisher last night, were named to the
all-tournament team.
