Hartford, Conn. - Senior co-captain forward Val Beckwith
(Woburn, Mass.) totaled game-highs of 12 points and 10
rebounds to go with four assists, as the visiting Bates College
Bobcats posted a 68-54 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New
England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's
basketball action this afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium.
Trinity falls to 15-5 overall and 3-4 in the NESCAC with its third
consecutive loss, while the Bobcats improve to 16-7 overall and 5-3
in the league with their first win in three games.
Bates led, 11-4, early but Trinity rallied to take a 19-18 lead
on a jumper by junior forward Christine Card (Waterbury,
Conn.) with under eight minutes remaining in the first
half. The game remained tight until the final two minutes of
the first half when Bobcat sophomore guard Maggie Depoy
(Chicago, Ill.) nailed a pair of three-pointers to
highlight a 7-3 Bates run that gave the visitors a 35-30 lead at
the break. Bates made five treys in eight tries in the first
half, while the Bantams missed all five of their long range
attempts. Sophomore forward Molly McGlynn (Sleepy
Hollow, N.Y.) kept Trinity in the game with 11 first-half
points.
Trinity opened the second frame with an 8-2 spurt to take a
38-37 lead at the 15-minute mark on a lay-up by McGlynn, but the
Bobcats with an 11-3 run, including seven points by Beckwith, to
push the lead back up to 48-41 with 11 minutes on the clock.
The Bantams remained in striking distance until under five minutes
were left, as Bates rookies Kelsey Flaherty (South
Portland, Maine) and Kristen Finn (Winthrop,
Mass.) combined to score seven unanswered points in 1:38
and increase the Bobcat advantage to double figures at 62-50.
Bates finished 8-for-17 from three-point land for the game,
while Trinity shot just 16.2 percent (6-for-37) from the field in
the second half and 26.8 percent (19-for-71) for the game. Bobcat
freshman Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) dished out
a game-high six assists. McGlynn finished with a game-high 15
points, nine rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots, while junior
co-captain guard Claire Arnstein (Hicksville,
N.Y.) totaled 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and
three steals for Trinity.
