Lexington, Va. - Trinity College Bantams sophomore midfielder
Rachel Romanowsky (Hampstead, N.H.) scored the
game-winning goal on a free-position shot with just 32 seconds left
in the second overtime period as the No. 11-ranked Bantams defeated
the No. 7-ranked Washington and Lee University Generals, 14-13, in
women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Watt Field. Trinity
improves to 5-0 and the Generals fall to 3-3 with their third loss
in a row.
The Bantams held a 5-4 edge at halftime on the strength of three
goals from Romanowsky, but the Generals responded scoring four of
the first six goals in the second stanza to take an 8-7 lead at the
18:23 mark. Trinity senior attacker Jesse Schultz (Troy,
N.Y.) then tied the contest, 8-8, when she made good on a
free-position shot at 17:52. The Generals outscored the
Bantams, 4-1 over the next 12:18 to take a 12-9 lead with 4:04
remaining in the contest. Trinity then responded with three
straight goals, including the game-tying marker with three seconds
left by sophomore attacker Caitlin Irvine (Westwood,
Mass.), which sent the game to extra sessions and set up
Romanowsky's heroics.
The Generals were led by sophomore midfielder Emmy Mathews
(Baltimore, Md.), who tied a career-high with five goals.
Sophomore attacker Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville,
Va.) also tied a career-high with three goals, while
junior attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va.)
notched two goals and one assist. Sophomore goalkeeper
Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va.) played all 72:00
minutes and registered 15 saves.
Romanowsky's scoring efforts were supplemented by Irvine, Schultz
and junior attacker Jennifer Calver (Barnard,
Vt.), who recorded two goals each. First-year Gina
Dinallo (West Hartford, Conn.) played the
entire duration between the pipes and recorded 10 saves.
