Hartford, Conn., July 28, 2009 - The Trinity College women's
basketball team, coached by Wendy Davis (4th
Season), posted its best regular season record since
1999-00 at 17-8 and finished tied with Wesleyan and Colby for fifth
in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) at
4-5. The Bantams advanced to the NESCAC semifinal game for
the first time in College history with a 76-71 quarterfinal triumph
at Bates before succumbing at Bowdoin, 74-56. Trinity
finished third in the NESCAC in scoring defense with 55.8 points
allowed per game.
Junior co-captain guard Claire Arnstein (Hicksville,
N.Y.) started every game at guard and led Trinity in
scoring with 12.1 ppg (302, 11th in NESCAC), assists (84, 7th
in NESCAC), and steals (53, 5th NESCAC), while shooting .370
percent from the field (112-303), .303 from three-point range, and
.622 from the foul line (51-82). Arnstein also averaged 4.6
rebounds per game. Classmate Tess Donie (Worcester,
Mass.) started every game at the swing position for the
Bantams and averaged 7.2 ppg (180) and 1.9 rpg (47) while notching
46 assists (3rd on team) and 17 steals. Donie, who came back
from an injury that forced her to miss 13 games as a sophomore,
shot 27.7 percent from the field (52-188), 28.3 percent from
three-point range (13-46), and finished second on the squad and
ninth in the NESCAC with a 77.8 free throw percentage (63-81, 2nd
on team in FT and FTA). Both were selected to the
all-tournament team in the Cardinal Classic at Plattsburgh State,
while Arnstein represented the Bantams on the All-NESCAC Second
Team, and Donie graced the NESCAC All-Academic squad.
Junior forward Christine Card (Waterbury,
Conn.), the Plattsburgh Tournament MVP and Trinity's
representative on the NESCAC All-Sportsmanship Team, also started
all 25 games. Card averaged 9.6 ppg (241) and a team-high 7.5
boards per game (188, 3rd in NESCAC), with a team-best .427
field goal percentage (106-248) and a team-best .806 free throw
shooting percentage (29-36). Card added 43 assists, 31 steals
(3rd on team), and a team-high 31 blocked shots (5th in
NESCAC). Sophomore center Molly McGlynn (Sleepy
Hollow, N.Y.) played in every game with 24 starts, scored
6.1 ppg (152), and pulled down 5.4 boards per game (135, 2nd
on team) with 11 blocks (2nd on team), while shooting .407 from the
field (57-140) and .679 from the charity stripe (38-56).
Junior co-captain forward Jessica Sims (Peabody,
Mass.) played in 23 games at forward and averaged 1.3 ppg
(29) and 3.6 rpg (82) while notching 37 steals (2nd on team) and 14
assists. Sims earned NESCAC All-Academic honors.
Sophomore guard Kristen Fahey (Cumberland,
R.I.) and freshman guards Kaitlin Ciarleglio
(Waterbury, Conn.) and Michelle Royals
(Torrington, Conn.) were solid in the backcourt this
winter. Fahey, playing both guard spots, appeared in every
game, and started three times, while averaging 4.3 ppg (108), 2.0
rpg (51) and 2.1 apg (53, 2nd on team) with 12 steals.
Fahey shot 35.6 percent from the field (36-101), a team-best 45.7
percent from three-point range (21-46), and .652 from the foul line
(15-23). Ciarleglio started the first 14 games at point guard
before suffering a season-ending injury and averaged 8.7 ppg (122),
3.2 rebounds per game (45), and 2.6 apg (37) with 20 steals.
She shot .392 from the field (47-120), made nine three-pointers in
32 tries, and shot 73.1 percent from the foul line (19-26).
Royals averaged 11.6 ppg (291, 2nd on team, 13th in NESCAC),
3.1 rebounds per game (78) with 32 steals (2nd on team), while
shooting .425 from the field (102-240), .256 from three-point land
(22-86), and .739 from the line (65-88, led team in FT and
FTA). The top scoring freshman in the NESCAC, Royals was
selected as the league's player of the week once this season.
Senior forward Catherine Doyle (Cambridge,
Mass.) played in 18 games, sophomore forward
Rebecca Cohn (San Francisco, Calif.) appeared in
21 games, first-year forwards Brianne Cowden (Jamison,
Pa.) and Meghan Mahder (Fairfield, Conn.)
played in 25 and 20 games, respectively, and rookie guard
Alison Wettstein (Shelburne, Vt.) saw action in 11
games. Doyle had nine points and grabbed 20 rebounds, while
Cohn tallied 18 points and 19 boards, Cowden averaged 2.3 ppg (58)
and 2.2 rpg (55) while making 18 free throws in 30 attempts, Mahder
recorded 11 points and 36 rebounds, and Wettstein scored five
points. Doyle, who gave Trinity three players on the NESCAC
All-Academic Team in 2008-09, finishes her Bantam career having
played in 71 games and started three times with 46 points and 86
rebounds.
