Hartford, Conn. – Freshman guard Marcia Voigt
(Skillman, N.J.) scored a career-high 23 points in her
first career start to lead the visiting Amherst College Lord Jeffs
to a 75-55 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England
Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball
action this afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity falls to 13-3
overall and 2-1 in the NESCAC with its first loss in 11 games,
while the Lord Jeffs, ranked No. 2 in the nation, improve to 17-0
overall and 3-0 in the league.
Amherst started the second half with a 22-8 scoring run, and
held at least a 20-point lead for all but one minute the rest of
the way. Junior co-captain center Sarah Leyman (Cincinnati,
Ohio) scored nine of her 12 points in the second half for
Amherst, who held Trinity to 8-for-33 field goal shooting after the
break and outrebounded Trinity, 48-39, for the game. The Bantams
forced Amherst into 18 turnovers but committed 20. Amherst missed
14 of its 17 tries from long range but held a 35 to 20 advantage in
free throw attempts.
Amherst took a 21-11 lead with 8:29 left in the first half, but
Trinity scored the next eight points, including four by senior
tri-captain center Christine Card (Waterbury,
Conn.), to cut the lead to two at 21-19 with just under
seven minutes remaining. Amherst answered with a 10-3 run to take a
nine-point lead late in the first, but a short jumper by Bantam
junior guard Kristen Fahey (Cumberland, R.I.)
pushed the score to 33-26 at the half.
Sophomore guard Michelle Royals (Torrington,
Conn.) paced Trinity with 11 points and three assists,
while senior guard Claire Arnstein (Hicksville,
N.Y.) and Tess Donie (Worcester, Mass.)
scored 10 points apiece, and Card finished with eight points, a
team-high eight rebounds, and three blocked shots. Leyman grabbed a
game-high 11 boards, while Amherst sophomores Jackie Renner
(Newton, Mass.) and Caroline Stedman
(Walpole, Mass.) added 13 points each.
