Hartford, Conn. – Freshman guard Jennifer Harding
(Santa Monica, Calif.) had nine points and a game-high
nine rebounds to lead the visiting Williams College Ephs to a 57-52
win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball action this
afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity closes the regular season
at 15-8 overall and 3-6 in the NESCAC, earning the No. 7 seed in
the NESCAC Championship Tournament. The Bantams will play at No.
2-seeded Colby on Saturday, February 20 in the NESCAC
Quarterfinals. Trinity has made seven NESCAC Tournaments including
two in a row. Williams ends its regular season at 18-6 overall and
7-2 in the league, earns the No. 3 seed in the NESCAC Tourney, and
will host No. 6-seeded Bates in the NESCAC Quarterfinal next
Saturday.
Williams opened the game with a 10-2 run, but Trinity battled
back and took a 22-20 lead on a coast-to-coast layup by senior
tri-captain guard Claire Arnstein (Hicksville,
N.Y.) with six minutes left in the first half. The Bantams
held a 31-25 lead at the break, as Arnstein, senior tri-captain
center Christine Card (Waterbury, Conn.), and
sophomore guard Kaitlin Ciarleglio (Waterbury,
Conn.) scored 26 of the 31 points. The Ephs slowly fought
back in the second stanza, taking their first lead of the half on a
layup by junior center Chessie Jackson (Goleta,
Calif.) with 8:29 remaining and never trailing the rest of
the way.
Ciarleglio paced Trinity with 14 points and added six rebounds,
and three assists, while Arnstein finished with 13 points, five
boards, and three steals, and Card added 10 points and team-highs
of seven rebounds and six assists. Trinity shot 23.5 percent
(8-for-34) in the second half, making just one shot from long range
in 10 tries, and missed seven of 17 shots from the foul line.
Williams held a significant sixe advantage at every position and
outboarded Trinity, 55-41, while blocking 14 shots. Freshman
Claire Baecher (Brunswick, Maine) blocked five
shots and classmate Danielle Rainer swatted four, while junior
center Taylor Shea (Allendale, N.J.) added nine
rebounds underneath for the Ephs.
