Lewiston, Maine - Senior Lauren Yanofsky scored 20 points and
grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the Bates College Bobcat
women's basketball team to a 54-47 New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) victory over the Trinity College
Bantams this afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium. Bates moves to
12-11 overall and 3-5 in conference with its third win in the past
four NESCAC games. Trinity drops to 14-7 overall and 2-5 in NESCAC
play with its fourth straight loss.
Junior Jessie Igoe added 13 points for Bates, while sophomore Annie
Burns had nine rebounds and a game-high six assists and three
steals. Kaitlin Ciarleglio was the lone Bantam in double figures in
scoring with 15 points. Rebecca Cohn grabbed a team-high nine
rebounds.
With both teams struggling mightily to put the ball in the bucket
in the first half (the score was 7-5 in Trinity's favor with 8:45
left), Trinity eased out to a an early lead and grew it slightly,
attaining a seven-point edge at 23-17 with 1:17 left in the period.
Yanofsky hit a turnaround jumper in the lane to cut it to 21-17
with 1:39 to go, but the Bantams went into halftime with a 23-17
lead due to a final jumper by Tess Donie. Yanofsky was the high
scorer for either team in the half with eight points, while Royals
led Trinity with seven.
The Bantams extended the lead slightly to seven at 26-19 with 18:35
to play, and they still led by three at the 8:32 mark, when Claire
Arnstein penetrated for a layup and a 37-34 Trinity lead.
Igoe came back with a fast-break layup, assisted by sophomore
Kelsey Flaherty, to cut the lead to one, and Yanofsky gave Bates
its first lead since the sixth minute of the game with a layup that
made it 38-37 with 7:13 left. Yanofsky converted another layup and
Burns assisted senior Kellie Goodridge for a three-pointer that
made it 43-37. Burns stole the ball from a Bantam and then fed
Yanofsky for an open three with 4:59 remaining to make it a 12-0
run for Bates and a 46-37 lead. A jumper by Christine Card and a
layup by Ciarleglio cut it to four (48-44) with 3:02 to go, but
Igoe answered with a three-point play. Trinity again cut it down to
four (51-47) with 1:44 to play when Arnstein fed Ciarleglio for
another layup. In the final minute, Bates hit three out of four
free throws to ice the win. Bates shot only 17-55 (.309) from
the field, but Trinity was virtually the same at 17-56 (.304).
