Hartford, Conn. – Senior attackman Patrick Briody
(Hopewell, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal with 10
seconds left in overtime to lead the visiting Colby College Mules
to an 8-7 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action
this afternoon on Jessee/Miller Field. Trinity, ranked
No. 8 in New England, drops to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in the NESCAC
with its first loss in six games, while the Mules, ranked No. 7 in
New England, improve to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the league with
their second victory in a row.
Briody netted the clincher from the right wing, slinging the
ball on one bounce past Bantam sophomore goalie Peter
Johnson (Riverside, Conn.) while running to his
right. The Mules took the only three shots of the four-minute
overtime, although Trinity possessed the ball twice but failed to
advance it into the offensive zone. The Bantams appeared to
win the game in regulation, when junior attackman Kevin
Looby (Kansas City, Mo.) scored from close range after
picking up a missed shot by freshman attackman Jeff Hebert
(Cornwall, Ontario), but the officials ruled that the
clock had inadvertently been stopped too and the goal was deemed to
be too late.
Colby led, 4-0, after the first period as freshman attackman
John Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) scored twice to
highlight the Mule scoring early on. Senior midfielder
Andrew Williamson (Sudbury, Mass.) got the Bantams
on the board in the opening minute of the second quarter,
converting on the first of three assists in the game by
Looby. Bantam senior captain attackman Harper Cullen
(Rehoboth Beach, Del.) scored from Looby on a low rocket
later in the second, and Williamson assisted Hebert on a bouncer
past Mule senior netminder Tom Gianakos (Simsbury,
Conn.) to cut the lead to 4-3 with 2:32 remaining before
the half. Colby junior middie Alex Boches (Beverly,
Mass.) tallied his second goal of the game with 1:12 on
the clock to give the Mules a 5-3 edge at intermission.
After over seven minutes of scoreless play and a short-handed
goal by Colby senior captain midfielder Max Weiss (McLean,
Va.), the Bantams rattled off three unanswered tallies
over the final five minutes of the third frame to know the game at
6-6. Looby fed Cullen on the first goal and scored the next
on a wrap-around move behind the net, while Williamson bounced the
ball through Gianakos' legs from the left wing with 2:11 on
the clock to tie the score. The Mules went ahead on
Jennings' third goal with 7:23 left in regulation, and
Trinity tied the game for the final time when senior captain
midfielder Ray Mooney (Wellesley, Mass.) quickly
passed ahead to Hebert after a whistle who beat Gianakos on a
one-on-one from close.
Trinity outshot Colby, 35-22, but the Mules held a 32-to-16 edge
on ground balls and won 12 of the 19 face-offs, and either team
could capitalize on nine combined man-up chances. Cullen,
Hebert, and Williamson finished with two goals apiece for Trinity,
while Williamson added an assist, and Looby tallied four points on
one goal and three assists. Johnson finished with seven
saves. Boches scored twice for the Mules, while Weiss and
sophomore defenseman Brendan Moriarty (New Fairfield,
Conn.) added one goal and one assist. Gianakos made
12 saves, while junior midfielder Craig Bunker (Topsfield,
Mass.) was 12-for-19 on face-offs with five ground balls,
and senior captain defenseman James Brady (Walpole,
Mass.) grabbed a game-high nine ground balls.
