Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore midfielder Casey Egan
(Massapequa, N.Y.) had two goals, including the
gamewinner, and one assist to lead the visiting Tufts University
Jumbos to a 11-9 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in New
England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's
lacrosse action this afternoon on Sheppard Field. The
Bantams, ranked No. 4 in the nation, drop to 8-1 overall and
5-1 in the NESCAC, while the Jumbos, ranked No. 12 nationally,
improve to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the league with their sixth win
in a row.
The teams traded goals first 20 minutes of the game, before
Tufts took control with a four-goal spurt late in the first half
and early in the second half and held its lead to the final
horn. Egan opened the 4-0 run on a goal from sophomore
attacker Laura Kozin (Suffern, N.Y.) with 8:38
remaining before intermission, and Emily Johnson scored 3:55 before
the half to give the visitors a 10-8 advantage at the break.
After two more Jumbo scores over the first 10 minutes of the
second half, freshman attacker Megan Leonhard (Summit,
N.J.) broke the Bantam scoring drought with an unassisted
goal with 19:46 left that ignited a 3-0 Trinity run. Trinity
junior midfielder Rachel Romanowsky (Hampstead,
N.H.) notched her third and fourth assists of the game
with passes to freshman Kaitlin Hildebrand (Berwyn,
Pa.) and junior attacker Caitlin Irvine (Westwood,
Mass.) to cut the Tufts lead to 8-7 with 11:21 left, but
Jumbo sophomore midfielder Steph Perez (East Providence,
R.I.) registered back-to-back tallies after the 10-minute
mark to push the Tufts back to three.
Hildebrand and Romanowsky scored late goals to bring Trinity
back within a goal with 3:42 remaining, but Kozin stole the ball in
the Bantam defensive area and beat Trinity sophomore goalie
Gina Dinallo (West Hartford, Conn.) for an
insurance goal at the 2:29 mark. Trinity won the ensuing draw
with a chance to tie the game, but an offensive foul call on the
Bantams gave possession back to Tufts. Trinity sophomore
Liz Bruno (Andover, Mass.) stole the ball back,
but with just 10 seconds remaining the Bantams were out of time.
Hildebrand and Irvine finished with three goals apiece, while
Romanowsky had a goal and four assists, and Leonhard scored twice
for the Bantams. Bruno picked up a game-high seven ground
balls, and Dinallo made 13 saves. Johnson paced Tufts with
three goals, while Kozin had a goal and two assists, and senior
co-captain Jenna Abelli (Framingham, Mass.) added
one goal and one assist. Junior Sara Bloom (Summit,
N.J.) stopped 10 shots in the Jumbo goal.
