Williamstown, Mass. - Three unanswered goals at the end of the
fourth quarter allowed the Williams College Eph men's lacrosse team
to fight off the visiting New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Trinity
College Bantams, 7-4, this afternoon at Renzie Lamb
Field. Trinity drops to 6-3 overall and 1-3 in the NESCAC,
while the Ephs improve to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the league.
Williams led, 3-1, at the half, but Trinity fought back tied the
game when freshman Nick Shaheen whistled a quick shot past Vrla
with 8:44 remaining in the game, knotting things at 4-all.
Williams senior captain Richard Reuter found a small opening and
threaded a pass to Tommy Murray, who quickly fired a shot past
Bantam sophomore goalie Peter Johnson to give the
Ephs a 5-4 lead with 7:10 left. Senior Bryan Wrapp gave
the Ephs a 6-4 advantage late with a shot in the top corner on
the near side, and fired a shot from about 15 yards out 53 seconds
later that beat Johnson to account for the 7-4 final tally.
Trinity held many of the statistical advantages, including a
30-21 shot advantage and a 32-30 slim lead in groundballs. Johnson
finished with nine saves, while senior captain attackman Harper
Cullen scored twice for Trinity, and rookie Steve Manning
added two assists. Senior face-off man Corey Jacobs won 10 of
14 face-offs, while Wrapp scored three times, and senior goalie
Stephen Vrla made 14 saves.
