Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore attackman Cole Cherney
(Chappaqua, N.Y.) had a game-high four goals, including
the gamewinner in overtime with 2:20 on the clock, to lead the
visiting Amherst College Lord Jeffs to an 11-10 win over the
Trinity College Bantams in the New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse regular-season finale for
both teams this afternoon on Campus Field. Trinity ends
the year at 9-7 overall and 2-7 in the NESCAC, while Amherst closes
at 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the league. The Lord Jeffs have
qualified for the NESCAC Championship Tournament and will play a
first round game on Sunday at home against an opponent to be
determined.
Amherst recovered from a 6-1 deficit at the end of the first
quarter, rattling off six unanswered tallies from the 9:04 mark of
the second quarter to the final two minutes of the third frame to
take a 7-6 lead. Cherney scored twice during that run, gave
Amherst a 10-9 lead with 6:37 left in regulation, and finished with
the clincher on a short-range rifle from the left side that sailed
over the right shoulder of Trinity sophomore goalie Peter
Johnson (Riverside, Conn.), who was just turning around a
quick feed from behind by sophomore midfielder Alex Fox
(Garden City, N.Y.).
Trinity went ahead, 5-0, over the opening 12 minutes of the
game, as junior attackman Kevin Looby (Kansas City,
Mo.) led the charge with three straight goals over a
seven-minute span. Fox ended the Lord Jeff drought with 2:16
to go in the first, but Bantam freshman Steve Manning
(Tyngsboro, Mass.) scored the first of his two goals in
the game with 16 seconds on the clock. Fox scored a man-up
goal to give Amherst its first lead with 3:19 remaining in the
third quarter, and teams traded goals for the rest of
regulation.
Trinity senior midfielder Andrew Williamson (Sudbury,
Mass.) tied the game for the final time with 2:18 left in
the fourth quarter off a pass by freshman attacker Jeff
Hebert (Cornwall, Ontario) from behind the net.
Amherst nearly went ahead seconds later when Johnson stopped a
tricky bouncer by Lord Jeff sophomore Brian McFeeley (Essex
Falls, N.J.). Trinity gained possession and managed
three open shots but two went wide and a third was saved on a short
hop by Amherst sophomore backstop Sam Jakimo (Woodbury,
N.Y.).
Johnson finished with 11 saves and Jakimo had eight.
Hebert and Manning scored twice apiece for Trinity and Hebert added
an assist. Fox scored three goals and sophomore Evan
Redwood (Lutherville, Md.) scored twice, while junior
Parker Holcomb (Dallas, Texas) was 14-for-23 on
face-offs for the Lord Jeffs.
