Hartford, Conn. – Freshman Mark Simmons (East
Hampton, N.Y.) made 17 saves in goal and sophomore
midfielder John Froats (Yorktown, N.Y.) tallied
two goals and an assist to lead the visiting Wesleyan University
Cardinals to an 8-3 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New
England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's
lacrosse action this afternoon on Jessee/Miller Field.
Trinity drops to 6-4 overall and 1-4 in the NESCAC with its second
straight loss, while the Cardinals improve to 6-4 overall and 2-3
in the league.
Wesleyan sophomore attackman Ted Citrin (New Canaan,
Conn.) scored the only goal of the first quarter, and the
Cardinals erupted for five scores in the second quarter to earn a
6-0 advantage at the break. Senior captain Lonny
Blumenthal (Ballwin, Mo.) scored his two goals in the
first half. Freshman attackman Jeff Hebert (Cornwall,
Ontario) broke the Trinity scoring drought with a goal
from senior midfielder Andrew Williamson (Sudbury,
Mass.) 1:55 into the third quarter, but Froats answered
for the Cardinals with the first of his two goals in the second
half at the 6:24 mark of the third frame. The teams traded
goals midway through the fourth quarter, and Bantam junior
midfielder Chris Hartzell (Hingham, Mass.) picked
up a ground ball late in the fourth in front of the Cardinal goal
and quickly shot past Simmons to account for the 8-3 final tally.
Trinity outshot Wesleyan, 30-26, with 14 of those shots coming
in the fourth quarter, while Wesleyan won 10 of the 13 face-offs
including 10 in 11 opportunities by senior captain midfielder
Matt Ward (Boxford, Mass.). Trinity
sophomore defenseman Alex Gottsch (Glencoe, Md.)
picked up a game-high five ground balls and Bantam rookie
Matt Cohen (East Lyme, Conn.) netted his first
career goal.
