Hartford, Conn. – Senior Sarah Remes (Silver
Springs, Md.) scored four goals to lead the No. 8-ranked
Trinity College Bantams to a 19-3 win over the Bridgewater State
College Bears in the opening round of the NCAA Div. III
Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament this afternoon on
Robin Sheppard Field. Trinity improves to 14-3 on the season,
establishing a new program record for wins, while Bridgewater State
ends their season with a 15-5 mark. Trinity advances to the
second round of the NCAA Championship Tournament for the second
time in four years.
Trinity jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 7:20 before
Bridgewater first-year Michelle Navoni (Mansfield,
Mass.) found the back of the net to put the Bears on the
board. The Bantams answered with a 9-0 run, highlighted by
three goals from Remes, giving Trinity a 13-1 lead at the midpoint.
Junior Caitlin Irvine (Westwood, Mass.) scored
three goals for the Bantams and classmate Alisen Urquhart
(Redding, Conn.) had a standout game, collecting a goal,
three assists, three draw controls, and two ground balls. Junior
Rachel Romanowsky (Hampstead, N.H.), who had
missed five games due to injury, returned to score two goals in
limited second half action, joining sophomore Liz Bruno
(Andover, Mass.) and senior Kristen Phelps
(Sudbury, Mass.), as multi-goal scorers in the
match. Bruno also caused three turnovers.
Trinity sophomore Stephanie Fisher (Brunswick,
Maine) earned the win, improving to a perfect 6-0 on the
season, combining for three saves with first-year goaltender
Olivia Whitney (Danvers, Mass.). Bridgewater
senior goalkeeper Meghan Griffin (Billerica,
Mass.) made nine saves for the Bears.
Trinity will travel to Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania on
Sat. May 15 for a 2:30 p.m. match against No.-7 ranked Stevens
Tech. The Bantams, playing in their sixth NCAA National
Tournament, lost to Babson in 2008, and defeated Endicott College
19-3 in the first round of the 2007 Tournament before falling to
Gettysburg 13-8 in the second round.
