East Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College Bantams
defeated the Wesleyan University Cardinals, 3-1 in New England
Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's ice hockey
action this evening in a game that was played outdoors at
Rentschler Field. The Bantams improve to 11-8-3 overall and
9-7-1 in the NESCAC with their sixth consecutive victory, while the
Cardinals fall to 8-10-3 overall and 7-9-1 in the league.
Tonight's contest, a doubleheader that began with the
Trinity and Wesleyan women playing at 4 p.m., was part of
Harvest-Properties.com Whalers Hockey Fest 2011, a historic
celebration of Connecticut hockey that features an AHL game between
the Connecticut Whale and the Providence Bruins, five premier
college games, at least 15 elite high school, junior and prep
school games and a “Whale Town”, featuring exhibitors,
games, the Whalers Mobile Hall of Fame and a Hartford Whalers
alumni vs. Boston Bruins alumni classic. The Trinity
women's team defeated Wesleyan, 5-1, in the first game of the
doubleheader at Rentschler, 5-1.
Trinity opened the scoring when senior Egor Petrov
(Novokuznetsk, Russia) scored 10:15 into the opening
period, but Wesleyan junior forward Geoff Mucha (West
Chester, Pa.) wristed in a shot from the left wing over
the left shoulder of Trinity senior goaltender Wesley Vesprini
(Lexington, Mass.) with 1:28 left in the first. After a
scoreless second period that saw Trinity outshoot Wesleyan,
12-to-7, Bantam junior forward Sean McCarthy (Duxbury,
Mass.) lit the lamp 1:31 into the third frame from
classmate Michael DeMayo (Seaford, N.Y.) with the
gamewinner.
Trinity senior forward Matt Quigley (Pittsburgh,
Pa.) added an insurance marker at the 6:54 mark of the
third. Vesprini finished with 24 saves and Wesleyan sophomore
backstop Matt Hadge (Canton, Mass.) made 26
saves. Wesleyan was 0-for-5 on power plays and Trinity was
0-for-2.
