Waterville, Maine - The visiting Trinity College Bantam defense did the job over the final 13:57 of the game after the Colby College Mules had cut the lead to one goal to pull out a 6-5 victory in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse this afternoon at Bill Alfond Field. Trinity, ranked No. 19, moves to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference. Colby falls to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Colby's defense also came up big in the second half, holding Trinity without a goal for the final 25:53 of the contest. The Bantams had a 6-3 lead, but the Mules made it a two-goal game with 2:10 left in the third quarter. The Mules cut the lead to 6-5 when Derrik Flahive (Littleton, Colo.) ripped a shot in the back of the net with 13:57 to play. Colby had a few good chances in the final five minutes, but could not score on Trinity goaltender Peter Johnson (Riverside, Conn.), who had 11 saves.
The Bantams started each half explosively, with three goals in the first six minutes of play to go up 3-0. Senior attackman Kevin Looby (Kansas City, Mo.), sophomore Jeff Hebert (Cornwall, Ont.), and freshman Terence Olsen (Weatogue, Conn.) had the scores. After a goal by Colby's Alex Boches (Beverly, Mass.) made it 3-1, Trinity went ahead by three goals at 4-1 when Looby tallied again with 39 seconds left in the first period. The Mules cut the lead to 4-3 at halftime when Mark Squicciarino (Titusville, N.J.) and John Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) scored in the first eight minutes of the second quarter. The Bantams once again came out strong to start a half, getting a goal by senior attackman Greg Brennan (East Setauket, N.Y.) with 12:07 left in the third and Looby with his third goal of the game with 10:53 left for a 6-3 lead.
Johnson also was active around the net and had four groundballs to lead Trinity. Eric Phillips (Darien, Conn.) and Brendan Newland (Oakland, Calif.) both had three groundballs. Colby's Craig Bunker (Topsfield, Mass.) won 13-of-15 face-off attempts and had nine groundballs. Chris Healy (New Canaan, Conn.) added four groundballs for the Mules, while goalie Peter Reiley (Marblehead, Mass.) had eight stops.
