Bristol, R.I. – The visiting Trinity College Bantams
defeated the Roger Williams University Hawks, 9-7, in men's
lacrosse action this afternoon, tying the College record for wins
in a season with 11 triumphs this spring against just two
losses. The Bantam record of 11-2 ties the 1980 team for the
best in the program's history with one regular-season game plus at
least one post-season tilt remaining on the 2011 schedule.
The loss sends the Hawks to 8-8.
Roger Williams' Drew Beck (South Salem, N.Y.) tickled the twine
with just 27 seconds gone, but Trinity sophomore midfielder Nick
Sheehan (Williamsburg, Mass.) tied things up with a high blast
past Hawk goalkeeper Tyler Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) 1:55
later. Bantam sophomore attackman Rob Nogueras (Parkland,
Fla.) had a nice bid for the Bantams which clattered against the
near post moments later, keeping the game deadlocked at
one-all. Trinity took its first lead of the game with 4:48
left in the quarter on a tally by senior attackman Greg Brennan
(East Setauket, N.Y.). Dan Klink (Nashua, N.H.) scored for
Roger Williams with just 1:48 left in the quarter, and despite a
telling bid from Beck at the horn, the first quarter ended
deadlocked at two goals apiece.
Roger Williams came flying out of the traps in the second
quarter, but Bantam sophomore netminder Dominic Piselli (Rockville
Center, N.Y.) did well to deny the home attackers on several
occasions. On the Hawks' next goal, Beck fed Drew Smith
(Bayport, N.Y.) to cap off a quick counterattack and give Roger
Williams the lead again. Forty-one seconds later, Smith fed
Logan Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) to double the home team's
advantage. Roebuck grabbed another one just over a minute later,
making it 5-2 in favor of the home team. Trinity sophomore
attackman Jeff Rautiola (Acton, Mass.) had an excellent open-net
bid to bring the Bantams within two, but sent his shot wide before
classmate Jeff Hebert (Cornwall, Ontario) beat Roebuck with a high
shot to make it 5-3. Brennan then found the net with 4:27 left in
the half for Trinity's fourth goal, and Rautiola
would netted a pivotal goal with only ten seconds left in
the half to draw his team level at 5-5.
The Hawks won the openinf faceoff after the break and scored
just six seconds in, as Smith buried his shot from close range.
Nogueras took advantage of a defensive miscue just a minute later,
tying it 6-6, while Roebuck and Bantam sophomore
midfielder Steve Manning (Tyngsboro, Mass.) traded goals soon
thereafter. Klink had a good bid from distance as time
expired in the third quarter, that was stymied by Piselli.
Trinity senior attackman Kevin Looby (Kansas City, Mo.) notched the
eventual game winner at the 11:43 mark, while Shaheen added an
insurance score for the visitors with 1:37 left to play.
Piselli made 13 saves in the win, while Roebuck stopped 19 in the
setback.
