Trinity Advances to Men's Lacrosse NESCAC Semifinals with Win over No. 19 Wesleyan

Bantams Set Single-Season Win Record

Hartford, Conn. – Nine different players scored and junior goalie Peter Johnson (Riverside, Conn.) had another strong game in net for the Trinity College Bantams in a 10-5 win over the visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals in men's lacrosse action this afternoon on Jessee/Miller Field.  Trinity, ranked No. 13 in the nation and the No. 4 seed in the tournament, improves to 12-3 overall and 7-3 in the league, while the Cardinals, ranked No. 19 in the nation and the No. 5 seed in the tournament, lose their chance at a NESCAC title, as they drop to 10-5 on the year and 5-5 in the league.  It was the first men's lacrosse NESCAC Tournament victory for Trinity in men program history.

Trinity started the game on a 4-0 run, before Wesleyan senior Graham Gnall (Morristown, N.J.) stopped the bleeding with a goal midway through the first period.  A score by Trinity sophomore Jeff Hebert (Cornwall, Ontario) 27 seconds into the second period put the Bantams back up four goals, before Wesleyan senior co-captain Conor Malangone (Lake Grove, N.Y.) answered later in the period, bringing the score to 5-2.  Senior Kevin Looby (Kansas City, Mo.) scored his second goal of the game with 7:12 remaining in the first half, but freshman Aidan Daniell (Hopkinton, N.H.) found the back of the net with just 11 seconds remaining in the period, and started the third period with another, just 18 seconds in, to cut the Trinity lead to 6-4.

The Bantams closed out the game on a 4-1 run, as Johnson continued to frustrate the Wesleyan offense, which outscored Trinity 40-32 in the game.  Daniell notched a hat trick to lead all scorers in the game.  Sophomore Rob Nogueras (Parkland, Fla.) scored a goal and collected two assists, giving him a team-high 35 points on the season.  Wesleyan junior goalie Grant Covington (Gloucester, Mass.) finished the game with 10 saves, while Johnson made 11 for the Bantams.

Trinity will face No. 3-seeded Middlebury, in the NESCAC Championship Tournament Semifinals on Sat., May 7 at 3 p.m. at Tufts University.
