Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – Junior attackman Rob Nogueras (Parkland, Fla.) erupted for six goals, all in the second half, to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 14-6 victory over the visiting Williams College Ephs in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action this afternoon on Jessee/Miller Field.  Trinity, ranked No. 8 in New England, improves to 1-2 and wins its NESCAC opener, while the Ephs fall to 0-2 overall and in the league.

With the game tied at 1-1, Trinity freshman attackman Matt Hauck (Ridgewood, N.J.) and junior attackman Jeff Hebert (Cornwall, Ontario) scored unassisted goals 2:02 apart to give Trinity a 3-1 lead with 5:16 left in the first quarter.  The Bantams rattled off three more scores in the second frame, as junior midfielder Nick Shaheen (Williamsburg, Mass.) scored once and assisted on another goal, before Williams freshman midfielder Steven Kiesel (Excelsior, N.M.) stopped a 22:17-minute scoring drought with a tally from junior middie Will Stewart (South Salem, N.Y.) to close the first half with Trinity leading, 6-2.

Nogueras started his onslaught with a goal from sophomore midfielder Nick Branholm (Jacksonville, Fla.) 4:43 into the third quarter, but Williams closed to 7-4 on back-to-back tallies by Stewart later in the third.   Nogueras put the game out of reach with four unanswered goals in a 7:07 span, giving Trinity an insurmountable 11-4 advantage with 9:13 remaining in the contest.

Trinity more than doubled Williams' shot output with a 49-23 advantage, while forcing the Ephs into 20 turnovers and committing just six.  The teams combined to go 0-for-5 on man-up chances, and Trinity held a 30-to-25 edge on ground balls.  Shaheen finished with two goals and two assists, while Hauck scored twice, and Branholm notched one goal and one assist.  Junior middie Drew Grombala (Cincinnati, Ohio) led Trinity with six ground balls, and senior captain Peter Johnson (Riverside, Conn.) needed to make just six saves to earn his first triumph of the spring in the Bantam goal.  Stewart totaled three goals and one assist, while sophomore middie David Lee (Hillsborough, Calif.) picked up six ground balls, and rookie netminder Sean Dougherty (Smithtown, N.Y.) made 20 saves for Williams.
