(Summit, N.J.) broke a 6-6 tie with 10:30 remaining in the
game, scoring back-to-back goals to lead the Trinity College
Bantams to an 8-7 win over the visiting Hamilton College
Continentals in New England Small College Athletic Conference
(NESCAC) women's lacrosse action this afternoon on Sheppard
Field. Trinity, ranked No. 3 in the nation, improves to 13-0
overall and 9-0 in the NESCAC with its 27th consecutive
regular-season victory, while the No. 18-ranked Continentals drop
to 6-8 overall and 4-6 in the league.
Trinity grabbed an early 5-1 lead, highlighted by two goals by
junior Hadley Duncan (Rye, N.Y.), who finished
with three scores in the game. With 4:17 remaining in the
first half, Hamilton began to surge, capping the period with a goal
by senior Ashley Allen (South Portland, Maine) at
4:17 and another by junior Mariah Monks (Cape Elizabeth,
Maine) at 2:07, cutting the Trinity lead to 5-3 at the
midway point.
The Continentals picked up where they left off in the second
half, scoring two goals to open the period, tying the game at 5-5.
With 12:13 remaining, and momentum in favor of Hamilton, junior
Rachel Friedman (Fairfield, Conn.) silenced the
home crowd with a juke move in front of the Trinity goal, before
burying a shot in the right corner to give the Continentals their
first lead of the game, 6-5. Trinity had not trailed in a
game since one month ago today, when Catholic University led the
Bantams 13-8, before Trinity came back to score six unanswered
goals in the final 5:18, winning the game on a goal by Duncan with
two seconds on the clock.
Duncan came up with more heroics today, scoring her third goal
of the contest, to tie the game at 6-6 with 11:37 on the clock,
shifting momentum back in favor of the home team. Leonard
followed that up with a goal at 10:30, and another at 9:37, which
would prove to be significant. With time winding down,
Hamilton senior Libby Shultz (Saratoga Springs,
N.Y.) netted her second goal of the game at 1:04, to keep
Hamilton's hopes alive, and cut the Trinity lead to
8-7. Trinity won the ensuing draw control, and managed to run
the clock down, escaping with their winning streak intact.
Trinity hosts Amherst College (10-3, 6-3 NESCAC), ranked no. 10
in the country, on Wed., April 24, under the lights on Robin
Sheppard Field at 7 p.m., in the regular season finale.
