Box Score Hartford, Conn. – Junior goalie Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass.) made 40 saves to lead the visiting Stonehill College Skyhawks to a 2-0 shutout win over the Trinity College Bantams in men's ice hockey action this evening on Williams Rink at the Koeppel Community Sports Center. Trinity drops to 5-2 overall, snapping a three-game winning streak, while the Div. II Skyhawks move to 5-4 on the year.
Stonehill took control of the game early, taking advantage of three first period penalties whistled on Trinity. The Skyhawks, playing with a man-advantage for a significant chunk of the opening period, outshot the Bantams, 16-5, to start the game. One of those shots, by Stonehill sophomore Richard Harris (Grand Island, N.Y.), found its way into the Trinity net, breaking the deadlock.
After the first intermission, Trinity came out more offensive, outshooting the Skyhawks, 13-10, but unable to find the back of the net in the back-and-forth second period. Trinity sophomore Nathaniel Heilbron (West Vancouver, British Columbia) matched Tasiopoulos strong goaltending, coming up with several clutch stops to keep Trinity within striking distance heading into the final period.
The Bantams stepped up their approach further in the third period, applying significant offensive pressure, but Trinity was unable to muster a game-tying score. Four Stonehill penalties gave Trinity several scoring opportunities in the frame, but Tasiopoulos continued to cause frustration for the home team. Late in the third period came perhaps the biggest save of the night, delivered by Stonehill's crossbar, which rejected a shot from Trinity sophomore Michael Hawkrigg (Toronto, Ontario), who has been red hot of late. The Bantams had several other scoring opportunities in the period, outshooting Stonehill, 22-6, in the frame. Stonehill netted an empty-netter with five seconds remaining on in the game to seal the deal.
Tasiopoulos moves to 3-2 in net for the Skyhawks, and sophomore Nathaniel Heilbron (West Vancouver, British Columbia) finished with 30 saves in his first loss in three consecutive starts. Trinity was unable to capitalize on seven power play opportunities.
