Box Score

Middletown, Conn. - Sophomore forward Jackson Brewer (Newton, Mass.) scored his team-leading 10th and 11th goals of the season, the first with four seconds left in regulation and the second 1:36 into overtime, to help the visiting Trinity College Bantams recover from a 2-0 deficit and defeat the Wesleyan University Cardinals, 3-2, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's ice hockey contest this evening.  Trinity improves to 13-5-3 overall and 10-3-3 in the NESCAC, while the Cardinal fall to 9-10-4 overall and 5-8-4 in the league.  The Bantams, which will complete this two-game series with Wesleyan tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the last regular-season game of the 2012-13 season on its home ice, keeps alive its chances to earn the top seed in the NESCAC Championship Tournament.  The Bantams are three points behind first-place Bowdoin with wo games left including a neutral-site, rescheduled matchup between the schools on Monday, February 18 at 7 p.m. at Brooks School in North Andover, Mass. to close the regular slate.

Brewer, the reigning NESCAC Player of the Week after notching three goals and one helper in a 7-2 win against Colby last weekend, pounced on a rebound of a shot into a wave of players in front of the Wesleyan net by freshman Michael Hawkrigg (Toronto, Ontario) and snapped a wrist shot inside the right post to force the extra frame while Trinity had junior goalie Ben Coulthard (South Windsor, Conn.) on the bench in favor of a sixth skater. Wesleyan had just iced the puck with 10 ticks left, bringing about a faceoff in the Cardinal zone to the right of senior goalie Glenn Stowell.  Trinity won the faceoff and Hartrigg threw the puck in front from the left circle before the puck trickled to the right side, where Brewer got off a quick tying shot.  In overtime, Brewer was stationed in the slot and got a centering pass from down low on the left from senior captain forward Zach Lombardi (LOcust Valley, N.Y.).  He stopped the puck and sent a low shot through the pads of Stowell for the winner.

Wesleyan had built a 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the second period as freshman Jay Matthews got the first when he sent a shot from the right circle that appeared wide of the net but deflected in off a Bantam defender at 3:21 of the period.  At 18:52, senior Nick Craven netted his 16th of the campaign.  Craven chased down a pick sent out of the Cardinal zone off the glass at center ice while Wesleyan was killing a penalty, raced up ice, and deked Coulthard before lifting a high backhand into the net for a short-handed goal.  Trinity cut the margin in half at 4:13 of the third period on the fifth goal of the year by senior Jordan So (Toronto, Ontario), who had an open net to hit from the edge of the left circle as Stowell was caught out of position trying to cut down the angle on senior Jeff Menard (Burlington, Mass.), who had the puck in the right circle.  Instead, Menard, who had received a pass from brother Chris Menard (Burlington, Mass.), sent the puck across to So before Stowell could adjust.  Trinity outshot Wesleyan, 38-22, as Stowell made 35 saves and Coulthard 20.  Trinity improved to 47-26-3 all-time vs. Wesleyan but the teams had split the last 13 meetings, 6-6-1, over the previous seven years.
