Trinity Women's Lacrosse Takes Season Opener At Babson

Hartford, Conn. – Senior attacker Hadley Duncan (Rye, N.Y.) and senior tri-captain midfielder Megan Leonhard (Summit, N.J.) combined for seven goals to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 17-6 victory over the visiting Babson College Beavers in women's lacrosse action this afternoon on Robin Sheppard Field.  Reigning NCAA Division III Champion Trinity, ranked No. 1 in the nation, extends its winning streak to nine games with the win in its season opener, while the Beavers drop to 1-1.

Trinity led, 3-0, 5:09 into the game, as sophomore midfielder Caroline Hayes (Greenland, N.H.) scored on a free position 2:06 into the contest and senior attacker Kaitlin Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa.) assisted classmate Haley Thompson (Ipswich, Mass.) and Leonhard on consecutive tallies over the next three minutes.  Babson got on the board with 20:20 on the clock when junior midfielder Misha Beatty (Westwood, Mass) converted on a free position, and a 14:55 scoreless drought ensued before Duncan scored unassisted to ignite a 4-0 Bantam run.  Beatty scored again with 1:10 left before the break to make the score, 7-2, but Leonhard closed the half with her third goal with just three seconds left for an 8-2 Trinity lead at intermission.

Trinity scored the first two of the second half, but Beaver sophomore attacker Rachel Secrist (Westford, Mass.) scored back-to-back goals to cut the Bantam lead to 10-4 with 19:23 remaining.  The teams traded goals, before Trinity netted six of the game's final tallies over the final 10 minutes including a pair of scores by firs-year attacker Molly Cox (Norwell, Mass.). 

Trinity finished with a 29-17 shot advantage, as Bantam senior tri-captain goalkeeper Olivia Whitney (Danvers, Mass.) totaled seven saves and Babson junior backstop Julie Baharestani (Syosset, N.Y.) made 10 saves.  Duncan led the way with four goals, while Leonhard had three, Hayes and Hildebrand notched two goals and two assists apiece, and Cox finished with two goals and one assist for the Bantam offense.  Beatty had a hat trick for Babson.  Hayes added three draw controls, while junior defender Midge Daniel (Wellesley, Mass.) added three ground balls, and junior defender Lyndsey Shepard (Hamilton, Mass.) recorded a game-high four caused turnovers for Trinity.  Babson senior tri-captain midfielder Jameson Spang (Kennebunk, Maine) had a game-high four draw controls, and sophomore Amanda Gahagan (Brandon, Vt.) paced the Beavers with three ground balls.
